Daniel Jacob Messner, 25, of 45 E. Eighth St., McMechen, was charged with death of a child by a parent by child abuse after allegedly shaking the 3-month-old child, causing brain bleeds which eventually killed the child over three days.

On Nov. 18, police responded to a call at his home, where Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Nate Klempa was on scene, providing CPR to the unconscious child. According to Messner, the child vomited during feeding and went limp, which prompted the call to police.

MCMECHEN — Cleanup was underway in the southern end of McMechen on Thursday morning after flash flooding hit the area overnight.

City crews worked to clear mud and debris covering streets near Jim’s Run and Reilly Hill Road throughout the day, the area most impacted by the flooding.

McMechen Fire Chief Jeff Kady said the rain began around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and city workers were out until 4:30 a.m. Thursday trying to minimize damage.

Crews were out again later in the morning cleaning up the south end of Marshall Street and parts of 21st and 22nd streets with an excavator.

Water rose about three or four feet above the ground near homes by Jim’s Run on Wednesday night, Councilman Josh Green said, pointing to the height of a window at a house on 21st Street.
